Dream Catcher

DreamCatcher“The way to maintain one’s connection to the wild is to ask yourself what it is that you want. This is the sorting of the seed from the dirt. One of the most important discriminations we can make in this matter is the difference between things that beckon to us and things that call from our souls.” —Clarissa Pinkola Estes

I feel such a calling to my soul.  After the most difficult year of my life, I feel a need to turn that pain and fear into joy and beauty.

I have started on a series of connected journeys this fall. One is a journey as an artist; one is a journey as a healer; and one is a journey as a musician.  At the core, they are all healing journeys, because they are healing me.

As an artist, I am beginning to define my own vision and style. I am taking two online courses at the moment to assist me: Paint Mojo with Tracey Verdugo and Unearth Gather Create by Gillian Lee Smith/Cox.  The first offers a freedom to explore playing with paint and symbology.  The second is like an entire college education in art in 6 weeks!  I am learning so much.  I will be working on assignments and projects from these classes for months to come, as the course lessons will be available long after their 6 week sessions.  In November, I will take Pixie Campbell’s Visual Quest – using shamanic journeying in creating art.

My goal is to use this time and these resources to explore my own art making process.  What images/colors/personal mythology and symbology call to me most?  What do I truly want to express?  What makes my art different from others?  What do I most need to create to express my own authentic voice?  Big questions, I know, but, I feel ready to explore…

The image above is a dream catcher made with acrylic paint, acrylic inks and pan pastels.  I used three stencils from Stencil Girls as well.   I found that drawing with black ink using a skewer was quite liberating.  I had less control, but the lines were more dynamic.  I felt the same about letting the acrylic inks spread and drip.  I love the process!  I hope to make more of these and explore dream catchers as a theme.

I will be sharing a bit about each of these journeys on my blog.   How they will unfold is a mystery to me, but the uncertainty engenders an excitement and energy that brings purpose into my world.
